Kaiser Permanente Includes Sustainability Scorecard in RFPs
 |
|
Well, it's happened! Last summer at ARTA's Green Summit in Quebec City, we predicted that the healthcare sector would soon require vendors to complete a sustainability scorecard as part of the RFP process. Wal-Mart led the trend and P&G issued its scorecard last summer.
Kaiser Permanente has issued an updated or Generation II Sustainability Scorecard that is included in its RFP process for ALL medical and surgical products, effective as of mid-April. Expect other healthcare organizations to follow suit!
Click here to view Kaiser's scorecard. Scroll down to Magazine Articles.
Based in Oakland, Calif., Kaiser Permanente is the largest managed care organization in the U.S. Kaiser operates 35 medical centers and 431 medical offices and spends about $1 billion each year on medical products.

 | Practice Greenhealth Publishes "The Business Case for Greening the OR"
Download article now from ARTA's Virtual Library | | Practice Greenhealth (PGH) recently posted on its website the articles and presentations from its annual meeting, CleanMed. While only members have access to these documents, ARTA can share "The Business Case for Greening the OR," downloadable now from
ARTA's Virtual Library.
The article notes the incorrect perceptions that exist about the costs of implementing Green practices and recommends OR Best Practices to reduce waste:
"The culture of waste in the OR is driven in large part by the increasing volume of disposable medical supplies on the market today. Many hospitals -- after jumping on the disposables bandwagon -- are beginning to rethink the use of reusable textiles and supplies in the OR.
Reusable surgical textiles are demonstrating increased clinician satisfaction while also providing comparable barrier protection. And reusable table and mayo stand covers, surgical towels and basins are common sense switches that drive down costs by reducing the volume of waste generated."
Examples of Hospitals Saving $s with Surgical Textiles
- The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) moved to reusable textiles in the OR more than 15 years ago, and utilizes a vendor to provide clean, sterilized surgical textiles. In 2010, UMMC avoided the creation of 138,748 pounds of waste as a result of using reusable textiles in the OR, which correlates to estimated cost savings of nearly $39,000 in disposal costs and an estimated $39,000 in returned instruments, (which would have been thrown
away if the hospital was using disposable gowns and drapes in its OR).
- Kaiser Permanente's use of reusable surgical gown and basin sets reduced the organization's regulated medical waste by 30 tons, at a savings of 3.8% in 2010, according to Andew Knight, Senior Sourcing Director of Kaiser Permanente in San Diego.
Two ARTA members have joined PGH as business members (ARTA is an association member). Congrats to MIP and SRI Surgical for supporting PGH's efforts to educate healthcare providers and Green healthcare operations. Click here if you are interested in finding out more about PGH membership.

ARTA's Clean Education Session Features LCA Update and Operator Roundtable on Costs and Benefits of Going Green
June 7 at 8 a.m., Room N227-228, LVCC
|
Are you sick of hearing about "Going Green" yet? It's literally everywhere in our society and it's not going away. In fact, running your operations in the most sustainable way possible is an endeavor you shouldn't wait to embark upon.
Note the article above left. Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest healthcare organizations in the world, is requiring all vendors to submit a sustainability scorecard on their companies, how they do business, as well as the sustainability of the products they offer.
ARTA's education session during Clean, "The Environmental Benefits of Reusable Textiles," is designed to help you market the Green benefits of reusable textiles and learn about the costs involved in taking your facility Green. We hope you can join us for our education session June 7 in Room N227-228 at the Las Vegas Convention Center following the ARTA Breakfast.
ARTA President Steve Tinker will begin the 90-minute session by providing an overview and update on current life cycle analyses (data needed to make the case that reusable textiles are the more sustainable option over single-use disposables). Then a U.S. for-profit and a Canadian non-profit operator -- Don Pedder of Reino Linen and Brendan O'Neill of London Hospital Linen -- will share the costs, benefits and savings they have seen from their Green programs in the past 18 months.
And last but not least, Ed McCauley of United Hospital Services will offer an overview of his reusable isolation gown program and the waste reducation and savings to the hospitals UHS has served over the past two years.
We hope you will join us!
