 | New Research: Reusable Protective Garments Provide a 94% Savings in Carbon Emissions Over Disposable Garments |
Reusables win again! ARTA member UniTech Services Group recently engaged Exponent, an independent scientific consulting firm, to conduct an environmental life cycle analysis (LCA) of the reusable protective garments it provides nuclear facilities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. "Baseless environmental claims made by disposable protective garment suppliers had been confusing our end users who want to fully evaluate the impact of their PPE choice. We sought hard data and facts to help our customers understand the clear environmental superiority of reusable protective garments," said Gregg Johnstone, director of marketing and sales for UniTech.
"The independent study demonstrates that reusable protective garments provide a 94% savings in carbon emissions compared to PVA disposable garments," he said. "In addition to the environmental benefit, they provide superior comfort, better strength and fit, and significant cost savings per use." As a barrier garment, there are many similarities between reusable radiological garments and surgical gowns and drapes. | |

Based in Springfield, Mass., UniTech is a subsidiary of UniFirst, a national provider of work wear and textile services employing 8,000 people. UniTech is the world leader in radiological laundering and protective clothing programs with locations in North America and The Netherlands, Germany and France. Their cleanroom garment division, UniClean, provides critical barrier textile products to cleanrooms nationwide.
To download the complete study go to the ARTA website under Resources, and click on "Articles." While protective garments for the nuclear industry is a specialized market, this new research affirms and helps the textile services industry further prove the advantages of reusable textiles. |

| The Washington Post Researches Issue of Medical Waste: U.S. Hospitals Generate Nearly Six Millions Tons of Trash Each Year!
| When Washington Post Reporter Nina Shen Rastogi's son was hospitalized, she couldn't believe the massive amount of items that were thrown away in the course of his two-day stay. It caused her to wonder just how much trash do hospitals produce?
She decided to do some research and found that most of the data available is 20 years old (the study showing that hospitals produce 6,600 tons of waste daily). So she turned to Practice Greenhealth for help in securing more up-to-date information.
Here's what she found:
- 33.8 pounds of waste is produced per patient each day, according to a 2010 Practice Greenhealth survey of 114 member hospitals.
- As of 2008, there were 951,045 staffed hospital beds in the United States, according to The American Hospital Association.
- This represents 5.9 million tons of garbage produced annually by American hospitals.
You can read the complete article on the Washington Post's website. |
