Register NOW:  What Healthcare Laundry Facilities Need to Know About Pharma Waste
HLAC cohosts this Thusday, April 27 webinar with ARTA. Webinar free to members and HLAC-accredited laundries; nonmembers pay $29.95.

The Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council (HLAC) and the American Reusable Textile Association (ARTA) have partnered together again to present a webinar on Thursday, April 27 at 2 p.m. EST, "Managing Pharmaceutical Waste: What Healthcare Laundry Facilities Need to Know."

Charlotte A. Smith, RPh., MS, will be the primary presenter. Smith is senior regulatory advisor, PharmEcology services for WM Sustainability Services in Houston. Joining her is Gregory Gicewicz, past president of HLAC and owner/operator of Sterile Surgical Systems in Tumwater, WA; and Thomas "Tony" Fitzgerald, HLAC inspector.

The webinar covers the basics of how to manage waste pharmaceuticals that are inadvertently included in clients' soiled linens. Also included is discussion of the two major federal regulatory agencies -- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) -- that have jurisdiction over the regulation of pharmaceutical waste, and the impact of state environmental regulations. Time is allotted for Q&A at the end of the session.

Specific topics as they apply to the healthcare laundry include an update on current and future DEA and EPA regulations; jurisdiction of state environmental authorities; receipt of trace and bulk chemotherapy; receipt of syringes, vials, IV bags, etc.; employee safety, management of inadvertent pharmaceutical waste -- identification, containment, security and disposal; hazardous vs. non-hazardous (EPA); controlled substances (DEA); developing policies and procedures; communicating with clients; vetting hazardous waste vendors; and generator status and recordkeeping.

"It's no secret to the healthcare laundry that these are highly regulated wastes, but it's also clear that there tends to be some confusion over the many different aspects involved," said John Scherberger, president of HLAC. "We are pleased along with our co-sponsor ARTA to be able to provide this forum and we believe it will be most informative and useful to the healthcare laundry operator."

The webinar is free for accredited laundries and ARTA members; unaccredited laundries/nonmembers pay $29.95. Unaccredited laundries/nonmembers should registers and will receive an emailed invoice.  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
